The Mirpuri Foundation Sailing Trophy has been named as an official UNESCO Ocean Decade event
The Mirpuri Foundation Sailing Trophy has been recognised by UNESCO for it’s efforts in protecting biodiversity, unlocking ocean-based solutions and changing humanity’s relationship with the Ocean.
The regatta was established in 2020 by the Mirpuri Foundation as part of its Marine Conservation Program to raise awareness and help fund ocean health initiatives. Becoming an official event of the Ocean Decade is a recognition of the Mirpuri Foundation´s commitment and dedication to sustainability.
The UNESCO Ocean Decade helps find ocean science solutions for sustainable development and the regatta has been recognised for tackling several categories of UNESCO’s Ocean Health Challenge.
Challenge 2 – protect biodiversity, Challenge 5 – unlock ocean-based solutions to Climate Change, and Challenge 10 – Change humanity’s relationship with the Ocean, are the three key areas the regatta was identified as making a considerable contribution.
UNESCO specifically identified the Mirpuri Foundation Ocean Award, in partnership with the International Coral Reef’s Initiative (ICRI), which recognizes excellence in the scientific community and rewards the most innovative projects designed to impact the health of our oceans positively.
In addition to the Ocean Award, the institutional partnerships with ICRI as well as the European Space Agency were seen as contributing factors, along with the regatta leading by example as a Plastic-free event.
Chairman of the Mirpuri Foundation, Paulo Mirpuri said “Receiving the recognition of UNESCO means a great deal to us at the foundation and will go a long way in helping amplify the regatta’s message and efforts to help protect our ocean’s wellbeing. We will carry UNESCO’s Ocean Decade recognition with pride.”
The United Nations UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development runs from 2021 to 2030. The UN’s vision is “the science we need for the ocean we want”, with success closely aligned to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.
The mission of the Ocean Decade is to catalyse transformative ocean science solutions for sustainable development, connecting people and our ocean, a goal totally aligned with the Mirpuri Foundation Sailing Trophy purpose.
The Mirpuri Foundation Sailing Trophy stands as one of the major international regattas, that celebrates the sea and its inhabitants through sports and is considered one of the most sustainable sailing events in the world.
