The Mirpuri Foundation Sailing Trophy Recognised as a UNESCO Ocean Decade Event for the Third Consecutive Year
The Mirpuri Foundation Sailing Trophy has once again been recognised as an official event of UNESCO, marking the third consecutive year the regatta has earned this prestigious distinction.
Established in 2020 as part of the Mirpuri Foundation’s Marine Conservation Program, the regatta is a symbol of the Foundation’s unwavering commitment to ocean health and sustainability. As a UN Ocean Decade event, the Mirpuri Foundation Sailing Trophy continues to be acknowledged for its impact in protecting marine biodiversity, advancing ocean-based solutions, and reshaping humanity’s relationship with the sea.
The United Nations UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development runs from 2021 to 2030, aligning closely with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Mirpuri Foundation Sailing Trophy contributes significantly to several of the Decade’s key challenges, in particular: Challenge 2 – Protect and restore ecosystems and biodiversity ; Challenge 5 – Unlock ocean-based solutions to climate change; Challenge 10 – Change humanity’s relationship with the ocean.
UNESCO has highlighted several of the regatta’s initiatives as exemplary, including the Mirpuri Foundation Ocean Award. This award honors groundbreaking scientific research and innovation with tangible, positive impacts on ocean health.
Additionally, the regatta’s enduring collaborations with ocean protection institutions, as well as its continued commitment to operating as a plastic-free event, were key factors in its ongoing recognition.
Dr. Paulo Mirpuri, President of the Mirpuri Foundation, commented:
“We are deeply honoured to be recognised by UNESCO for the third year in a row. This acknowledgment strengthens our resolve to champion ocean protection and amplify the message of sustainability through sport. We proudly carry the UN Ocean Decade endorsement as a symbol of our commitment to a better future for our oceans.”
Now firmly established as one of the world’s leading sustainable sailing events, the Mirpuri Foundation Sailing Trophy unites competitive sport with environmental stewardship. The regatta continues to raise awareness, inspire action, and fund vital ocean conservation initiatives – setting an example for others to follow.
